Waking up tired after a « full » night almost always has one of these explanations: normal sleep inertia mistaken for exhaustion, an alarm landing in deep sleep, a fragmented night you don't remember, or a real duration far shorter than your time in bed.

Telling these apart changes everything, because the fixes differ. Here's how to identify yours.

Sleep inertia: the first 20 minutes don't count

Nobody wakes up fresh on the second: the sleep-wake transition includes an inertia phase — heaviness, cotton-wool head — that normally lasts 10 to 30 minutes. Judging your night inside that fog is unfair: the real verdict comes mid-morning. If you're functioning well at 10:30, your rough wake-up is probably… normal.

The deep-sleep alarm

Sleep alternates cycles of roughly 90 minutes, and being yanked out of deep sleep produces tenfold inertia — the famous « hit by a truck » morning. It's often a timing matter: shifting your alarm 20-30 minutes (either way) can land it in a lighter phase. A stable wake time helps the clock pack deep sleep earlier in the night.

The fragmented night you don't remember

Repeated micro-arousals — noise, heat, alcohol, reflux, apnoea — fragment the night without leaving memories: come morning, only the fatigue remains. The clues: dry mouth, reported snoring, wrecked sheets, a partner describing breathing pauses. That last one belongs with a doctor, without delay — one of the signals detailed in when to see a doctor.

Real duration, not time in bed

Eight hours in bed can contain 6.5 of sleep: 40 minutes falling asleep, awakenings, fuzzy time. That's the blind spot measurement illuminates: Ouate times your actual sleep onset every night (motion sensors of a phone resting on the mattress — no microphone) — the first piece of your « real duration » puzzle. Many discover their night starts 30 to 50 minutes after lights-out… and that this is where their morning fatigue sleeps.

Shortening that start is the most accessible win: a regular audio ritual, a prepared wind-down — the guides fall asleep fast and what to listen to take it from here.

The rough-morning checklist

Stable wake time seven days a week; evening alcohol cut for a test week; cool, dark bedroom; sleep onset measured and shortened; a short afternoon nap instead of a lie-in. If after three weeks of this hygiene mornings remain an ordeal — or someone reports pauses in your breathing — see a doctor: some tired mornings have diagnosable causes.

Your questions

Why am I more tired after 9 hours than after 7?

Often an alarm landing in late deep sleep, or a lie-in that shifted your clock. Regularity beats quantity: a stable 7 hours makes better mornings than a chaotic 9.

Does needing morning coffee mean something is wrong?

A pleasure coffee, no. An absolute-necessity coffee without which nothing starts, every single day, is a clue that the night falls short in duration or quality — read the clue.

Are « smart alarm » cycle apps reliable?

Movement-based phase estimates are approximate, but aiming for a wake-up window rather than an exact minute is sound: the logic matters more than the precision.

Is snoozing for 10 more minutes a good idea?

The snooze chains fragmented micro-sleeps that feed inertia. Better: set the alarm 15 minutes later and get up on the first ring.
